Best Music of 2012

As 2012 draws to a close I wanted to take a look at some of the standout albums of  the year.  We saw a wide variety of intriguing new releases from our favorite bands, and a comforting amount of breakout albums from new acts.  Throughout the remaining weeks of the month I will be taking it album by album to give you the best of 2012.

#10-Dirty Projectors- Swing Lo Magellan: Following up 2009’s critically acclaimed “Bitte Orca”, The Dirty Projectors released their new album Swing Lo Magellan this year.  Led by frontman Dave Longstredth, the band gives us 12 tracks that stay true to the sound that the band perfected for themselves with their 2009 hit.  Songs like the opener, Offspring are Blank and Dance For You contain a distinguished use of unusually accented rhythms that somehow fit into place just perfectly, and unconventional background vocals that fill out the melodies in such a strange and pleasing manner.  The title track and others such as Irresponsible Tune offer a change of pace, displaying a warm and soft side to the band that we haven’t fully seen come out in any of their other albums.  In Irresponsible Tune, Dave Longstredth gives a bittersweet ending to the album singing “In my heart, there is music .In my mind is a song. But in my eyes, a world. Crooked, fucked up and wrong”, as the soft acoustic ballad brings his heartfelt message to a close.
